Ness Icon

Summary of Ness Icon e-bike Review

Welcome to beautiful downtown Vancouver, where urban technology meets nature. Here, I had the chance to meet the guys from Ness, a Florida-based company, vacationing with their bikes. Today, we’re looking at the Ness Icon, a wave or deep step-through model that complements their traditional mid-step frame. The Icon comes in various colors: white with orange, yellow, and red accents, and even a pink-accented version.

One of the standout features of the Icon is its integrated cabling, giving it a cleaner look. Additionally, the bike has a support arm to protect the chainring and a plastic guide to keep the chain on track, essential for a pedal-assist and throttle-operated e-bike like this one. With a top speed of 20 miles per hour, the chain can bounce around, but the guide helps mitigate that issue.

The Ness Icon features a steel derailleur guard to protect the derailleur if the bike tips over, and the wheels are cast magnesium, providing durability and reducing the need for truing. However, these wheels are less flexible than traditional spokes, sacrificing some comfort for strength. Despite this, the bike remains lightweight at 51.5 pounds, considering its size and features.

The 350-watt internally geared hub motor is well-protected and quiet, and the centrally mounted battery is easily accessible. The battery, a 42-volt 13-amp-hour Samsung, weighs 7.5 pounds and is removable. Unlocking the battery requires flipping up the saddle, making it convenient to remove without disassembling the seat post. The battery also has an LED charge level indicator, so you can check its status before heading out.

The Icon’s design ensures smooth operation, even though it ships in great condition. The key remains in the ignition while riding, which can jingle around but stays mostly out of the way. Priced at $1,395, the bike is affordable and available both online and through shops in Miami. The bike’s components, like the flip-up saddle and adjustable seat post diameter, add to its versatility. You can replace the seat post with a suspension seat post if needed, complementing the front suspension fork with 35-40mm travel.

The alloy rear rack, equipped with a spring latch and standard gauge tubing, enhances functionality. The 20×1.75 tires provide additional comfort, along with the plush saddle and ergonomic grips. The grips, although basic, offer a comfortable ride. The telescoping stem allows for an upright riding position, reducing neck strain.

Braking is handled by 160mm mechanical disc brakes with motor inhibitors, ensuring safety when stopping. The 12-magnet cadence sensor provides responsive pedal assist, and the throttle override helps with starting from a standstill. The bike’s small wheels and 350-watt motor offer good performance, although the smaller wheel size can make it feel less stable at high speeds.

Folding the Icon is straightforward, with a kickstand that stays mostly out of the way. Despite lacking magnetic clasps or a Velcro strap, the bike remains compact when folded. The Ness Icon offers excellent value with a comprehensive one-year warranty and a five-year frame warranty. If you’re in Miami, you can test ride one, but for everyone else, detailed specs and measurements are available online. Enjoy your ride, stay dry with the fenders, and stay safe!
