Summary of the Hill Topper Folder MTB
Happy Sunday (or whichever day it is for you), and welcome to our latest e-bike review. Today, we’re diving into the Hill Topper Folder MTB, a folding mountain bike that’s intriguing, to say the least.
This bike marks the second review of a Hill Topper product for us. Recently, we looked at their City Ultra, and today, it’s all about their Folder MTB. Hill Topper operates primarily as a direct-order company, with about 50 physical dealers across the US. Most of their sales are online, and the Hill Topper Folder MTB is no exception.
The Folder MTB comes in a single frame size, a 16-inch frame, and is available in a striking blue color. Hill Topper has been around since 2008, initially making their mark by offering e-bike conversion kits. Their kits allowed customers to turn regular bikes into e-bikes by adding a motorized front wheel, a battery, and mounting brackets. However, since 2017, they’ve expanded into full electric bikes, like the City Ultra and this Folder MTB.
A notable downside of the Folder MTB being a direct-order bike is the lack of test riding before purchase. Plus, the bike comes in just one frame size and color, making it less versatile. The seat post, for instance, doesn’t go through the frame, limiting its adjustability. On the flip side, the bike is priced at $1,399, which is quite competitive for an entry-level e-bike.
Assembly of the Folder MTB can be a challenge. The instructions aren’t the clearest, and it took some time to get everything together, especially with components that required precise fitting. Additionally, direct-order bikes like this one can sometimes arrive with damage due to shipping, such as a misaligned front wheel, which can be a hassle to correct.
Customer service, however, is a strong point for Hill Topper. Their support team is responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful, making the buying and assembly process smoother.
The Folder MTB features a 350-watt motor with 80 Newton meters of torque, giving it decent power for hill climbs. This bike operates on throttle only—there’s no pedal assist or cadence sensor, which keeps things simple but means no speed display or battery level indicator. The throttle is live from zero miles per hour, making it easy to start from a standstill, especially on hills.
Despite being called a mountain bike, the Folder MTB doesn’t quite fit the typical mountain bike mold. It has 26-inch by 1.5-inch tires, which are smaller and less cushioned than typical mountain bike tires, making it less ideal for rough off-road trails. The frame is foldable, which is convenient for storage and transport but may feel less sturdy for hardcore mountain biking.
The bike has 21 gears, providing a good range for various terrains, although the triple chainring setup seems excessive given the motor’s assistance. The derailleur system is a Shimano Tourney, which is lower-end compared to the Shimano Alivio found on the City Ultra, despite the Folder MTB’s higher price.
Assembly tips include managing the throttle and brake cluster, which can be tricky, and organizing the cables with zip ties and Velcro straps. The hydraulic brakes provide strong stopping power but lack motor inhibitors, so you’ll need to be mindful to release the throttle when braking.
The battery is a 36-volt, 11-amp-hour unit with about 399 watt-hours. It’s a locking, removable battery, which is handy, but care is needed when removing it to avoid damage. The bike also features folding pedals, an aluminum rack, and an adjustable kickstand, adding to its versatility.
In summary, the Hill Topper Folder MTB is a versatile, entry-level e-bike with some unique features and a competitive price point. It’s not a hardcore mountain bike but serves well for shorter commutes and recreational rides. If you’re looking for a folding e-bike that’s easy to transport and store, this could be a good option.
