Sondors Xs

Summary

We’re out on the sunny beaches of Malibu, a perfect setting to test out the SONDORS XS. This bike is a significant upgrade from the original SONDORS model, which was a $500 crowdfunded fat tire bike. Priced at $1699, the XS offers high-quality components, a huge 48V 17.5Ah battery, and a powerful 750W Bafang hub motor, all packed into a sleek, modern frame. The design features a signature triangle compartment in the center, housing the large battery.

One of the standout features is the gigantic 4.9-inch-wide tires, making it a blast to ride on sand. Despite its hefty appearance, the bike is surprisingly light at 70.9 pounds, almost four pounds lighter than the listed weight on their website. You also get a one-year comprehensive warranty, a significant improvement from the previous 30-day warranty.

The SONDORS XS comes in two colors: Torch (reddish-orange) and Graphite (black), but only in one frame size, which might not be ideal for taller riders. As a tall rider myself at 6’3″, I found it a bit challenging to get full leg extension, but it should be fine for anyone six feet or shorter.

This e-bike features a solid array of components. The suspension fork, made by MOZO, offers 120mm of travel and adjustable air suspension. The bike lacks frame suspension but compensates with a suspension seat post, which adds comfort. The brakes are Tektro Auriga e-sub hydraulic disc brakes, offering excellent stopping power with 180mm rotors.

SONDORS has kept the design minimalist, which means you don’t get accessories like lights or fenders included. However, you can purchase these separately from SONDORS or third-party vendors. One minor drawback is the lack of bottle cage bosses, which could be handy for mounting accessories.

Moving on to the ride experience, the 750W motor provides plenty of power, making it easy to cruise on sand even at full tire pressure. Lowering the tire pressure to 5 PSI significantly improves traction on soft terrain like sand or snow. The cadence sensor is highly responsive, making the pedal assist smooth and intuitive.

The bike features a twist shifter with a Shimano Altus derailleur, providing a decent range of gears. The display, while not the brightest in direct sunlight, shows all necessary information, including speed, pedal assist level, and battery life.

Overall, the SONDORS XS is a beast of an e-bike, offering a premium ride experience with robust performance, especially on challenging terrains like sand. It’s a joy to ride and delivers excellent value for its price.
