Go Power Go Express eBike Review
the 2019 Go Power Go Express folding fat tire e-bike. Go Power, a new name in our review roster, is making waves with their wide range of electric bikes, scooters, and skateboards. The Go Express, priced at $1,250, offers a lot of bang for your buck, including free shipping within the US’s lower 48 states.
Initial Impressions
This bike arrived almost fully assembled, which is a win for those who dread the nitty-gritty of bike assembly. A quick 30-minute setup was all it took, including adjusting the brakes and inflating the tires. The inclusion of a toolkit and tire pump is a thoughtful touch that eases the process even more.
Build and Components
The Go Power Go Express boasts sturdy construction with minimal frame flex, a common issue with folding bikes. Its quick-release mechanisms make folding a breeze. While it lacks an integrated taillight, the headlight is a bright, integrated LED, controllable from the handlebar. However, the aluminum alloy fenders seem more protective of the bike than the rider, with the rear fender falling short of keeping mud and water off the rider.
The bike rides on Kenda fat tires, offering a pressure range from 5 to 30 PSI, making it adaptable to various terrains from sandy beaches to snowy paths. The front suspension fork, with 100mm of travel, significantly improves ride comfort, especially when paired with lower tire pressure on the rear for added cushion.
Riding Experience
My 30-mile test ride, including hilly and off-road sections, proved the bike’s mettle. The suspension fork and adjustable tire pressure made for a comfortable ride. However, the saddle felt a bit firm, and I’d recommend a suspension seatpost for longer journeys. The Tektro mechanical disc brakes, with their 160mm rotors and single-piston calipers, provided reliable stopping power even on steep downhill stretches.
The cockpit is equipped with ergonomic locking grips, Shimano 7-speed thumb shifters, and a basic but functional SW900 display. The display lacks USB ports for charging devices but offers extensive customization options. It shows battery life, speed, and pedal assist levels, and it can be adjusted to avoid glare.
Battery and Motor
The 48V 10Ah battery, providing around 490 watt-hours, is a solid performer, powering a 500W geared rear hub motor. This setup handled hills and long rides admirably. The battery placement under the seat tube is a bit awkward, requiring the saddle to be moved aside to remove the battery. Nevertheless, the battery’s on/off switch and secure charging port are practical features.
The bike’s motor, aided by the 20-inch wheels, offers a notable mechanical advantage. The Go Express can reach a top speed of 20 mph with impressive throttle power. On my test ride, I managed 30 miles using high pedal assist levels and throttle, with 20% battery left at the end.
Folding and Portability
Folding the Go Express is straightforward but requires both hands to maneuver when folded. It doesn’t stand independently well, so plan to prop it against something if you’re storing it folded. Despite this, its compactness when folded makes it easy to store in tight spaces, like a trunk or closet.
Final Thoughts
The Go Power Go Express is a versatile, budget-friendly folding fat tire e-bike, perfect for various terrains and rider comfort. Its solid build, decent range, and thoughtful components make it a great choice for those looking for an adaptable, easy-to-store e-bike.
