Summary of Gazelle Arroyo C8 HMB Elite E-Bike
the Gazelle Arroyo C8 HMB Elite, a sleek and efficient city e-bike that’s perfect for both commuting and leisurely rides. We had the pleasure of testing it out in the beautiful Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz, California. While it’s not exactly built for off-road adventures, this e-bike held its own remarkably well on our little off-road escapade.
The Gazelle Arroyo C8 HMB Elite stands out with its hybrid mid-drive Bosch motor, referred to as HMB, and its Shimano Nexus 8-speed internally geared hub. Priced at $3,699, it’s $400 more than the C7 model but offers some notable upgrades. One of the key differences is the integrated headlight built into the fender, which not only looks unique but also enhances visibility with its bright light and side cutouts. The bike features reflective sidewalls on the tires and elegant brown accents that tie in with the saddle and stitched faux leather grips.
In terms of performance, this model comes with a higher gear ratio compared to the C7, providing an extra gear for easier starts and climbs. Both models share the same Bosch PowerTube 500 battery and the Bosch Active Line Plus motor, capable of delivering up to 50 Nm of torque and supporting 105 RPM pedal assist. The motor is a step above the standard Active Line, offering more power and efficiency.
The frame of the Gazelle Arroyo C8 HMB Elite is a highlight with its sleek, narrow, and aerodynamic design. Despite lacking bottle cage bosses, it compensates with a well-crafted, matte black finish that seamlessly integrates the cables and wiring. This bike is available in three frame sizes, ensuring a good fit for different riders. The rear rack is sturdy, capable of carrying up to 27 kilograms (59.5 pounds), and is compatible with various panniers, including the MIK HD system popular in Europe.
Comfort is another strong suit of this e-bike. It features a 30mm travel front suspension fork, a 40mm travel suspension seat post, and a gel saddle, making it a very comfortable ride. The fenders are plastic but well-supported to minimize rattling, and the bike’s 28-inch wheels with high-pressure Schwalbe Energizer Active Plus tires ensure a smooth and efficient ride, even over bumps and cracks.
Safety and usability are enhanced by the hydraulic disc brakes, with a 180mm rotor at the front and a 160mm rotor at the rear, providing excellent stopping power. The adjustable stem allows for easy customization of the handlebar angle to suit different riding positions, from upright to more aerodynamic.
The bike also comes with a frame lock (AXA Defender) for quick stops, although the key system for the battery and lock can be a bit cumbersome. The Bosch Purion display is straightforward, showing speed, battery level, and range, with easy-to-use buttons for switching assist levels and checking trip data.
Overall, the Gazelle Arroyo C8 HMB Elite is a top-notch city e-bike that combines style, comfort, and performance. Whether you’re commuting, running errands, or just enjoying a ride around town, this bike has everything you need, from robust safety features to a comprehensive two-year warranty. Gazelle’s reputation for quality and their extensive testing ensure that this bike will serve you well for years to come.
