Summary of Ness Icon E-Bike
Welcome to beautiful downtown Vancouver, where technology transitions seamlessly into nature. Amidst the bustling shipping ports and scenic landscapes, I had the pleasure of meeting the team from Ness, who were vacationing from Florida. Today, we’re exploring the Ness Icon, their deep step-through model, which stands out with its vibrant color options and thoughtful design.
The Ness Icon boasts a sleek frame with integrated cabling, keeping the bike’s aesthetics clean and functional. Unlike the more traditional mid-step frame, the deep step-through design offers easier access, especially appreciated by riders looking for convenience and style. Available in various color schemes—white with orange, yellow, or red accents, and even a pink option—the Icon caters to diverse tastes.
One notable feature is the integrated cabling, providing a cleaner look and protection. Additionally, the bike includes a sturdy support arm to protect the chainring and a plastic guide to keep the chain in place over bumpy terrain. This is particularly useful for a pedal-assist and throttle-operated e-bike like the Icon, which can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.
The wheels are cast magnesium, offering durability and strength without the risk of spoke breakage. However, this also means a slight trade-off in comfort, as these wheels don’t flex like traditional spokes. Despite this, the bike remains relatively lightweight at 51.5 pounds, thanks to its alloy fenders and rack.
Powering the Ness Icon is a 350-watt internally geared hub motor, discreetly encased in the rear wheel. The battery, although slightly protruding, is well-centered for stability. It’s a robust 42-volt, 13-amp hour Samsung battery, easily removable with a key for security and convenience.
The suspension system, though basic, performs well. The front suspension fork with preload adjust and the option to add a suspension seat post ensures a comfortable ride. The quick-release feature on the seat post further enhances the bike’s portability.
The rear rack is practical, with a spring latch and standard gauge tubing. It protects the motor cable and derailleur, and the fatter 20 x 1.75-inch tires add extra comfort. The ergonomic grips, while basic, are comfortable and functional.
The Ness Icon is equipped with reliable brakes—160mm mechanical disc brakes with motor inhibitors for safety. The cadence sensor pedal assist system, with 12 magnets, ensures responsive and smooth assistance. The digital display offers essential information, though it could benefit from a more detailed battery indicator.
At a price point of $1,395, the Ness Icon provides excellent value with features like integrated front lights and a one-year comprehensive warranty (five years on the frame). Whether riding through the streets of Miami or exploring Vancouver, the Ness Icon promises a blend of style, comfort, and practicality.
